This mandated relocation caused the Greek population who built their lives in Kayakoy to desert the village, leaving it to fall into disrepair. Head up into the hillside ruins of this town where you can step inside the buildings, and view the beautiful interior decoration of the Katapongagia and Taxiarchis Churches.

The rock tombs of Tlos

For a unique historical experience, make your way approximately 35km into the hilly countryside to find Tlos. This ancient Lycian city is home to the ruins of homes, a basilica, an agora, a necropolis as well as public baths. You can also find a restored theatre and an Ottoman-era fortress overlooking the surrounding hillside. The area is most famous for its Lycian rock tombs which are expertly carved in the face of the acropolis hill.

Day trip to Patara
