Scenic tranquillity on the glittering Turquoise Coast
BEST TIME TO VISIT
The shoulder months either side of summer are also ideal for visiting via water. The days can get cooler (generally peaking around 20°C) this time of year, however the ever present humidity means you’ll rarely feel cold. Winter temperatures can get down to the single digits, visiting during this time is only recommended if you don’t plan to spend much time in the water.
Activities & Experiences
With seemingly endless lush coastline and rich Lycian historical sites, there’s no shortage of ways to spend your day when you organise a yacht charter in Fethiye. Explore ancient tombs, get your blood pumping with some paragliding action or simply sunbathe the day away. However you choose to spend your time in this beautiful port city, consider some of these must-do stops for your bespoke itinerary:
Oludeniz Lagoon
15km south of Fethiye lies the world famous Oludeniz beach. With its white sand and dense pine tree surroundings, this stretch of sand is extremely popular in the summer. Around the back of the beach however, you’ll find the less developed lagoon area which is not as crowded and no less stunning. This local favourite is an excellent place to sunbake, swim or enjoy some tandem paragliding.
The Ruins of Kayakoy
The abandonment of this hauntingly beautiful stone village is the heartbreaking result of the 1923 Population Exchange, which forced Greek and Turkish natives to return to their respective countries. This mandated relocation caused the Greek population who built their lives in Kayakoy to desert the village, leaving it to fall into disrepair. Head up into the hillside ruins of this town where you can step inside the buildings, and view the beautiful interior decoration of the Katapongagia and Taxiarchis Churches.
The rock tombs of Tlos
For a unique historical experience, make your way approximately 35km into the hilly countryside to find Tlos. This ancient Lycian city is home to the ruins of homes, a basilica, an agora, a necropolis as well as public baths. You can also find a restored theatre and an Ottoman-era fortress overlooking the surrounding hillside. The area is most famous for its Lycian rock tombs which are expertly carved in the face of the acropolis hill.
Day trip to Patara
Enjoy a private breakfast cruise as you speed toward Patara, 70km south of Fethiye. This city is home to extensive ruins of Ancient Patara. At the ruins, visitors can explore a basilica, a theatre and a colonnaded street among other structures. Once an important part of the Lycian League, you can truly feel the energy this once great city exudes. After a day of exploration, take a dip on Turkey's longest beach before being shepherded back to Fethiye in ultimate comfort.
