A cultural melting pot where Europe meets Asia
BEST TIME TO VISIT
Savvy travelers wishing to avoid the crowds should consider visiting during shoulder seasons of March to May, and September to November. Off-peak visitors can enjoy easier access to attractions as well as many art & cultural events. Temperatures in the shoulder season are generally pleasant, hovering around 20ºC.
Activities & Experiences
With a private yacht charter in Istanbul you truly have the best of both worlds. Many historic landmarks can be viewed from the water, allowing you to sightsee from the comfort of your own deck. Exploring the city on foot is made simple as your experienced crew transports you to the most convenient port for these must-do activities:
The Grand Bazaar
Boasting thousands of stores over 30,000 square meters, the expansive Grand Bazaar is one of the oldest shopping malls in the world. Rub shoulders with the locals as you browse one of a kind ceramics, traditional Turkish homewares and enticing spices.
Cemberlitas Bath
For an authentic cultural experience, a traditional Turkish bath such as Cemberlitas is an essential stop on your itinerary. Constructed in 1584, Cemberlitas Bath is one of the oldest operational Turkish baths. Unwind after a long day of sightseeing with a traditional body scrub, foam wash and massage.
The Blue Mosque
Also known by its official name of the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, the beauty of the Blue Mosque must be seen to be believed. Built between 1609 and 1616, this Ottoman-era imperial mosque is famous for its stunning blue tile interior. Painstakingly hand painted, the tiles become even more striking at night when they are bathed in the light from the Mosques' many domes.
Haghia Sophia
Gaze in wonder at one of the world's greatest monuments. The Haghia Sophia is a place of worship bearing the evidence of many religious changes during its lifetime. Constructed between 532 and 537 under the direction of Byzantine emperor Justinian I, this building has been a Christian church, a mosque and a museum. It is now a mosque once again, its interior famous for Islamic inscriptions and Christian mosaics mingling in harmony.
Topkapi Palace
Formerly the main residence of the Ottoman sultans, the Topkapi Palace has survived earthquakes and fires throughout its storied life. With four main courtyards and multitudes of smaller buildings, the complex has also functioned as an imperial treasury, a library and a mint. Since 1923, Topkapi Palace has been a museum containing Ottoman clothing, weapons and religious artifacts. This world heritage site also allows members of the public to view the Spoonmaker’s Diamond and the Topkapi Dagger.
Bosporus Strait
Connecting the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea, the Bosporus is the world's narrowest strait. An internationally significant maritime route, this busy waterway is more than just a shipping route. A cruise along the Bosporus will allow you to view landmarks such as the Blue Mosque, the 15th castle of Rumeli Hisar and the imposing Dolmabahce Palace without ever leaving the comfort of your yacht. Plan a stop in Kadikoy for delicious Turkish fare, or spend a relaxing afternoon viewing the many fortresses, villas and gardens along the shore.
